TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.
An oi-ilmnry meeting of tlio above Council took place hist evening. Present—His "Worship Hie Mayor (in the chair), and Councillor Jones, Gabites, Slierratt, Greenup, Foss, Prime, Shepherd, and Gibson. c'o!h;i:si’o>'!>k.n'C e. From John Mediae, asking for a remission of rates. H was moved by Councillor Shepherd and seconded by Councillor Jones —“That John MePae’s rales be rerail led, owing to his inability to pa y.” From Mr Henry Green, on behalf of sell and other residents re the building of a culvert or bridge in Strathalleii street at the foot of LeCrens Terrace, such work being in the writer’s opinion very necessary. The letter was referred to the Works Committee, to report. From John Hawkey, intimating that if in forming Catherine street the Council had more clay than they required, the writer was prepared to furnish drays to remove lot) or 200 yards. Deferred to Works Committee. From W. J. Heeklou, asking for au extension of time in which to pay rates. The application was granted. From tlie Secretary, to the Treasury enclosing an account for £322 5s being balance of monies due to the Treasury, for proportion of cost of maintainance of Timaru Hospital and proportion of expenditure on account of charitable aid.
Amongst the outward correspondence was a reply to the above, referring to the stoppage of Government subsidies and intimating that the Council were not in a position to meet the claim ; besides which it did not recognise it as a just one. The letter was approved. Prom the Colonial Secretary acknowIcding the receipt of Council’s letter enclosing copy of a resolution passed by the Council protesting against clause 29 of the Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Hill, 188!) becoming law, and stating the clause in question bad been struck out in Committee of the House of Representatives. W. Lutterworth was reappointed poudnkeeper and instructed to post notices of impoundings at the Town Hall as well as at the pound, as required by the new by-laws. WORKS COMMITTEE. The report of the Works Committee was road, and after some discussion adopted. PETITION. A petition was read from a number of residents in E street, drawing the attention of t he Council to the dangerous and impassable stale of the street, and requesting that the defects alluded to .should be remedied without delay. After a good deal of discussion it was resolved—“ That the petition of George Robins and others rc the state of E Street be received, and the Works Committee bo requested to report upon the same, at the next ordinary meeting of Council.” water wo nks debentures. It was resolved on the motion of Cr. Ross, seconded by Cr. Jackson—- ■' 'filial the .Finance Committee bo authorised to deposit the mono} - to arrive from Waterworks debentures with • the Lank of New Zealand, on deposit, at interest for the period of 3, 0,9, and 12 months.” TENDERS. The following tenders were opened and considered. For earthwork in Catherine, King, Edward, Princes and Charles streets — R. L. Sibley, £357 11s; Jones and Peters, £2BO 0s 8d ; fi. Lyon, £203 Is lOd; Hood, .02-30 17s; Callanan, £220 13s ; Lutler and Dcvanc, £2lO 10s (accepted) ; 'fi. Hampson, £IOO. One lender, for £287 18$, had no signat lire. Shingling—Tonesand Peters, £72 Ls 8d; Organ, £SO Its Od ; (Hidden and Stratford, £OO 7s 0d ; Butler and Dovane, £dl Ls ; T. Lyon, £Ol ; R. B. Sibley, £sl ; S. Wheeler, £.39 J9s 2d (accepted). WATERWORKS ENGINEER. It was resolved to hold a apeeial meeting on Monday next for the purpose of opening tenders for the appointment of waterworks engineer to the Council, and the Mayor said ho trusted there would be a full attendance of councillors on the occasion.
