MAORIS AT THE RINK.
The Maoris have taken to linking (says the “ Eangkitikei Advocate ” in describing a linking entertainment): —“‘O! ’twas a terrible thing to do!’ to insinuate the facile gliding rollers, whose swallow-like motion imparted to the dexterous skaters affecting them, such an easy idea of the power of controlling their course, as the wicked wily white men pirouetted round the room, and having succeeded in deluding the senses of the Maori onlookers with an idea of the ease with which they could be pedipulated, sat down amid the general applause; and then blandly handed the skates to the deluded aboriginals and urged them to emulate. The resulting spectacle was astounding I Description is baffled in its attempt to grapple with the scene which ensued. Those who donnedthe skates were soon scattered all over the floor, and those who gazed on the deluded aspirations of a fallen race were soon in as helpless a state as the butts of their laughter. The merriment was contagious, and equally fatal in its prostrating effects.” • _
