THE SHODDY MERCHANT.
The story which wc told the other day about an ingenious young Jeremy Diddlcr who was disposing of “ shoddy” in Timaru by means of a plausible yarn about his benevolent relatives has'had its denouement. A day or two ago a working tailor who had received an order to make a certain piece of trashy material into clothing went to a local draper to purchase the trimmings. No sooner was the stuff produced than the man behind the counter recognised a piece of his old stock. “ Why,” said he “ that’s a piece of old stuff that I almost made a present of to a distressed youth the other day.” “ Ah,” said the 'tailor “ you did, did ye, and pray how much did ye get.” “ Well, you see the young man was terribly hard up and the article wasn’t much good so wo let him have the remnant for half-a-crown.” “ Aye,” rejoined the tailor “ and he did a smart job with it for he sold it again as a bargain for 255.” So much for the price of shoddy.
