The “Argus” olllce was prepared for illumination in anticipation of a Ministerial victory. In Melbourne immense crowds occupied the streets fronting the “ Argus ” ami “Age ” olliccs, and received the successive announcements with cheers or groans. The people in the crowd appeared mainl} r in favor of the Perry party. Before the polling commenced the Ministry had a start of eight members returned unopposed, but as the returns came in, the hopes of their party received a rapid succession of blows. There arc not many notable persons among the rejected at the elections. Mr Coppin for Collingwood, Mr William (launson for Mast Melbourne, Dr Jvnaggs for West Melbourne, where he was for-' mcrlv returning - oil leer, and who was displaced by the Service on a suspicion of partiality, arc v.bout the only wellknown names. All the Orient steamers are to be fitted with electric light signals. The racer (South Hamilton lias been sold for 400 guineas, and Western Princess for 22 guineas. Xed Kelly lias sufficiently recovered, and will appear in the Police Court on Monday next. XMW SOUTH' WALES. The Port Darwin gold stolen from the south port has been recovered, ami trooper Pergusson has been arrested for the robbery. He was most active in seeking for the criminal, lie discovered wrappers in a Chinaman’s garden four hundred yards distant from the oi'iice, and had arrested four Chinamen and the post cilice cook, and while escorting them ;to Palmerston another constable, suspecting him, searched his box and found the gold. The Assembly has resolved to introduce Pills dispensing with the necessity of persons intending - marriage residing seven days previously in the district where the ceremony is to be performed ; also to prohibit the importation of Tandstiicker matches.
