A great sensation has been caused by the sudden death of Mr Grant, auctioneer, who was discovered at Mrs Skcat’s house in Vincent street by a carpenter coming to repair a sewing machine, lying across a chair, quite dead. It appeared that Grant came there last night intoxicated, and Mrs Skeat finding it impossible to get him away went to bed with her children. Wot Gold but Jasper after all, Napier, July 20. A scientific examination of the socalled goldbeariug quartz from To Autc shows that it contains no gold. The metallic appearance is due to the refraction of light through fractured portion of the surface. The appearance misled old golddiggors and defied the microscope. Pressure was applied to the fractures and this disturbed the deflection of light, and disclosed the true character of the appearance of the stone which is of the jasper family. D> J. C.
