Hotel Destroyed
Auckland, July 19
Coadc’s Hotel, owned by Maurice Kelly, was totally destroyed by lire on Sunday morning. No conjecture can be made as to the cause. The hotel and stock were only partially insured.
Pound Drowned
The body of a man was found drowned in Slippery Crock, near Drury yesterday. His identity is unknown.
Being- the Betcctivc
The llevd Habeas, Inspector- General of Schools, is now in Auckland, as Commissioner, enquiring into tbe management of the Howe street Industrial Home. He is also about to conduct an enquiry relative to complaints against tbe management of the Kohimaramara Training School.
Taming a MTew Chum,
At the Police Court this morning, a savage case of assault was tried. Thos. hurt, a miner, was disputing with Martin Dauatca, about wages, when the latter gave him several violent blows, knocked him down, hammered him while prostrated, and on his attempting to rise throw him down au embankment and cast a heavy lump of rock at him, exclaiming, “ You new chum, I’ll kill you.”
Auriferous Jasper.

A piece of quartz sent from Te Auto Mission station estate as a specimen of jasper proves to be rich in gold. There is some excitement in town in consequence. Tiie same sort of rotten quartz is to be found near Havelock, fourteen miles from Napier.

In the Magistrate’s Court, to-day, Samuel Dobbiuson was charged with stabbing his wife. The evidence showed that on the night of July 10, the accused went homo drunk, dragged his wife out of bed by the hair of the head, kicked her twice on the back, struck her across the arm with a poker, and stabbed her twice above the right ear, the thickness of the bone alone preventing fatal results. The bed and clothing were completely saturated with blood. Mrs Dobinson was removed to the hospital and has been there till to-day. The accused who'displayed great indifference in Court, was committed for trial.
Christchurch Beseigred by Unemployed.
The Government have found work for 500 of the unemployed, and 120 still remain on the books. Unemployed are coming here from North and South in the hope of obtaining employment on the railway, works.

Given Thompson and wife, tiro well dressed people, wore charged at the City Bench to-day with seven charges of house-breaking and formally remanded. The male prisoner admitted the offence but said his wife acted under coercion, only pledging the goods.
