Who Pays the Piper. 1

London, July 16,

The Marquis of Hartiugtou,Secretary of State for India, made a statement in the House of Commons to-day, in the course of which he said he was of opinion that England should boar a portion of the cost of the Afghan war, and that the whole burden should not be thrown upon India.

Irish Tenant Slights

A meeting was held to-day at which many members of the House of Commons expressed themselves as being opposed to the Bill for granting compensation to Irish tenants, which has been introduced by the Government.

The House of Commons lias adopted the amendment on the Irish Bill introduced by the Premier, Mr Gladstone,for the purpose of not relieving landlords from compensation if they refused the terms offered by tenants without offering some reasonable alternative. The House also agreed to a motion against the proposed statue to Prince Napoleon in Westminster Abbey. Mr Gladstone opposed it.

Afghan movements

Calcutta, July 10

Nows has been received from Afghanistan that Abdul Rahman, who was offered the Amcersliip, has crossed Hindoo Ivoosli, and is now believed to be on bis way to Cabul. It is also reported that the native infantry, under Shore Ali, ruler of Candahar, recently deserted near (lirishk, whore they had been dispatched to oppose the advance of Ayoub Khan. A force of British troops operating with Shore Ali pursued and routed them, and recovered the guns they had taken. It is understood that the position of affairs renders it necessary for the British troops to remain in Candahar until Shore Ali’s position is secure.
