TOMMY NUMBER TWO.
Considerable amusement was created in the Palmerston (North) Court recently by the reply of a lately-wedded Maori woman, who had taken a white man to husband. Upon being asked her name she replied, “ Eroka Pakclia.” As counsel, however, was aware of her changed state, he again asked, “ But your other name ?” “ Oh,” said the old lady, “Tommy.” “Yes, but Tommy what?” was the interrogatory. “Ob, Tommy No. 2,” answered the loving wife, who like a dutiful spouse, had allowed her lord and master to answer to Tommy No. 1. At the conclusion of her evidence (says the “ Manawatu Times ”) the old lady was again a source of merriment, as in leaving the court she evidently imagined she was quilting a native whare, and although about three feet nothing, doubled herself in two in order to pass through a dour 6 feet 6 inches high.
