A BANKRUPT COUPLE ON THE RACK.
THE IN'SUKANCE SCKAMCLE. [Pv TeUCO I! A I'll.] Wkli.ixutoX, July IJ. 11l rc D. P. Davis, an application was made for a rule nisi, calling upon the debtor and his wife to show cause wly they should not be committed to prison until they disclose to the trustees the place of concealment of a sum of money (£300) received by Mrs Davis from the New Zealand Insurance Company. Mrs Davis pcrsistantly refused, at an examination held on Monday last, to answer certain questions put by the trustee. The money was received two days prior to the filing of the declaration of insolvency, the policy being assigned by the debtor to his wile. The defence to the motion was that the money did not belong to the debtor, but by virtue of an assignment made by him in her favor in March, 1870, was the property of his wile. Ills Honor said he did not like to take such an extreme view at present, and provided the witness (Mrs Davis) promised to reveal what had become of the money if allowed time, he would adjourn the case till Priday.
