Wednesday, July 14. The Hon. J. Mcnzies moved—“ That the Education Act be so amended as to permit of the Bible being read in schools, subject to a conscience clause.” The motion was shelved. The deceased Wife’s Sister Bill passed its third reading by 14 votes to 9.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
BIBLE READING IN SCHOOLS. Sir W. Fox moved —“ That iu the opinion of the House tho Education Act be so amended as to provide for the permissive power being granted to Education Boards to introduce the reading of the Bible in schools, subject to the time tabic and conscience clause.” Dr Wallis seconded the motion. A debate ensued which was interrupted by the 5.30 adjournment. CHAIRMANSHIP OP COMMITTEES. On the motion for going into committee, Tho Hon. J. Hall moved—“ That Mr Hurst act_pro ton. as Chairman of Committees.” Mr Macandrew thought an older and more experienced member should he selected. He named Mr Thomson. An acrimonious discussion took place, resulting in the motion being carried, after which Mr Hurst withdrew from the position.
