The charge of embracery against Samuel Coombes, of Auckland, resulted in an acquittal. Judge Richmond, in discharging the prisoner, said he felt assured that this narrow escape would act as a caution to him, and lie would never again allow himself to sail so close to the wind. Six challenges were made by the Crown, and three by the defence. A day or two since a quiet and dignified gentlemen was walking through the street when ho was startled by a woman who rushed up to him all out of breath, and seizing him by the arm she gesticulated wildly and panted out, “Whistle ! sir, whistle!” He looked at her in amazement, and while he started she again urged him, “Whistle! whistle!” He finally found breath to tell her that he wasn’t much of a whistler, but if she would nominate the tunc he would do the best he could. Her eyes flashed, and she showed decided anger as she shook him by the arm, and again she said, “ Whistle ! whistle ! whistle !! whistle !!!” He stared more than he spoke, until with one arm stretched out towards a retreating street-car she took him off, and said something which sounded to him, “ Confound a fool that can’t whistle to a horse-car to accomodate a lab} r !” “Wtinted.
