SHOT THE WRONG MAN.
New York papers contain an account of a strange dcnoucnicnt of a tragedy which has excited much interest. Eleven months ago a gentleman at Bichmond, named Poindexter shot another gentleman who had been accused by a young lady, to whom Poindexter was engaged to be married, with having insulted her. For this murder he was sentenced to two years imprisonment. No exertion or expense was spared to avoid this sentence, light as it was, and an unsuccessful appeal was heard. Meanwhile Poindexter had been treated with great leniency, his affianced and friends visiting him. Public opinion was greatly moved because it was proved that his affiancied, Miss Cotterell, had been mistaken in accusing the deceased man, and thus Poindexter had shot him through a. mistake not Ids own. A bill was introduced into (he Legislature to dispense with his Avearing convict’s clothes, lie was removed to the Penitentiary, and the evening before he was allowed—by permission of; the judge, and attended by gaolers—to go to llie neighboring church and be married to Miss Cotterell, and returned to gaol immediately to suffer two years’ imprisonment.
