A large contract bad that day been lot by the Harbor Board, which would give employment to a largo number of carpenters, and besides, the Government had expressed their intention of proceeding with the Eairlic Creek line by sending down a person to superintend the work as soon as forty applications for work were received. He would telegraph to Wellington in the morning, and urge the Government to make known their propsals at once, and as soon as he had received a rcpljq he should forward it for publication. FIXAXCE. The Alayor said the Council had now, for the first time in the last four years, a balance in the Bank to their credit. They had been paying L2OO a year interest for the hist four years on their overdrawn account, but he hoped in future they would manage to keep on the credit side. The Alayor also stated that the amount available to the Works Committee for the ensuing twelve months would he L7OO, and of this amount nearly IMOO had been authorised to be expended on certain streets greatly needing repair at tbe south end of the town. They would therefore have to exercise great care in disposing of the balance. The Council then adjourned.
