TIMARU HARBOUR BOARD.
An ordinary meeting of the Harbor Board was held to-day. Present— Messrs E. Archer (chairman), T. W. Hall, W. Evans, W. C. Bcswick, W. Postlcthwaitc, W. Moody, E, Acton, J. 11. Sutter, K. E. Gray, R. A. Barker.
c o k ii n s r o x d j ■: x c n . The following was road : Erom the National Bank re rates of interest on deposits. Mr Moody suggested that the Board should endeavor to make an arrangement with the Bank similar to that made by the 'Waimatc County Council, allowing the Board’s funds to be placed at current account for a certain lixed term at the nfaximnm rate.
Erom Findlay and Co., Dunedin, demurring to the action of the Board in purchasing cement at their risk, and deducting from their account the difference between the amount paid and contract price.
It was resolved that notice havingbeen sent to the contractors that cement would, if necessary, be purchased at their risk, the Board adhere to their determination to enforce the terms of contract.
Erom James Bruce, intimating that in settling his account for TGI lbs 8d he had to outer his protest against the pay-
moot of £22 ss, value of Hour, short shipped.
The Chairman said this matter was in abeyance pending- proof of non-delivery. . From Garrick and Cowlishaw, solicitors, enclosing draft agreement re arbitration case of Anderson v. Harbor Board.
The Chairman said the agreement had been handed to the Board’s solicitors for approval.
from It. Turnbull, M.H.R., forwarding twelve copies of Mr Blackett’s report.
From the Marine Department Wellington, requesting that instructions should be given to the officers of the Board to see that the provisions of the •Seaman’s Act, relative to the loading line of vessels being made conspicuous on vessels visiting the port, arc strictly enforced.
From the Secretary of the Timaru Building Society, advising payments to the Board’s credit of £1,500, leaving a balance due on debentures of £2.500.
Mr Sutter said he expected that by next meeting of the Board, the whole ol the balance, including interest, would be paid. The Chairman—l am sure, gentlemen, you all accept the promise just made with gratitude. Mr Evans —I don’t know about that. For my part I should have preferred Ihe money remaining where it was at good interest. From 11. Turnbull, M.H.R., stating that the Board’s reply had been handed to Mr Blackett, who had forwarded it in turn to Mr Lowe for his remarks. THE LAXIUXG SERVICE. A report was read from the Manager of the Landing Service, intimating that the earnings of the Service for the last mouth amounted to £5Ol 16s 8d ; that the hands had been notified of a reduction in their wages from 10s to Os per lay ; and complaining of the inconvcidence and loss sustained through the use made of the lauding stage and beach uljaccnt by the owners of pleasure boats.
In reply to questions the Secretary dated that the Service for the month before last shewed a loss of £‘27 and during last month the profit was about £SO. Some discussion took place as to the power of the Hoard to interfere with pleasure boats but no resolution was arrived at. ; I xkku’s incroitT.
The report of the Engineer was read. This was to the effect that since last meeting ill feet of mole had been constructed, making 210 feet of the new contract, and that but for the recent rough weather 18 feet additional would have been finished. Tenders for the new wharf alongside of the mole had been invited. T]ie ground which had been offered as a quarry site was now under examination, and he would be in a position to report on it in a couple of days. In reply to Mr Moody the engineer stated that the di lie re nee between Timaru stone and Port Lyttelton stone was so great that an unpractised eye could discern it, the local stone being hard, compact, and durable, while the Lyttelton stone was friable, laminated, and in everv wav inferior.
Mr Gray said he came from a part of (he world famed fur its granite and building stone, and’ he was able to say Unit the Timaru stone was the nearest approach to Aberdeen granite of anything that he had seen in the colonics. Considerable discussion ensued, in the course of which the engineer stated that he had tried the effect of advertising widely before, and it had produced no adequate result, adding that contractors were in the habit of watching the papers.
An amendment that tenders be now opened was carried by Jive to three. The following tenders were received :
