Inspector Pender stated that he had. telcgraplicd to Inspector Mallard, of Dunedin, and had ascertained that the accused was well known to the police there, having been repeatedly eon-
victed. Ho had ;i couple of ch-yna. and bad been originally transported for ten years to Tasmania, for pocketpicking. at Balb, England. 11is Worship, addressing the accuse 1, told him that it was rather an unfortunate tiling- for him that lie had been remanded and these facts respecting Ids past career elicited, lie had been disposed to treat him leniently. The ease was now, of course, altered ; he would be imprisoned for 12 calendar months, with hard labor.
