NEWS OF THE DAY .
A total eclipse of the moon will take to-morrow night, commencing at 10.11) p.m. and ending at 0.53 a.m. on Wednesday.
The (settling up in connection with this meeting took place at the Grosvcnor Hotel on Saturday evening, when the following stakes wore paid over; —Mr P. Butler, .0112 10; Mr G. Thompson £3O; Mr >S. Osborne, £3B; Mr T. H. Brittan, £lO Mr H. D. Bradley, £2Blos. A number of other accounts were passed for payment, and the Treasurer stated that after paying all liabilities the .steeplechase account would he in credit.
The preamble of the Mooiliouhc Recognition Rill, introduced by Sir George Grey, sets forth that “ whereas Mr W. S. Moorhouse was chictly instrumental in originating and constructing the tunnel and railway between Lyttelton and Christchurch, the largest undertaking which had then been attempted in New Zealand, and whereas it is expedient to perpetuate the name of the chief promoter of the said undertaking in connection therewith,” the Governor is empowered to present to him a gold medal, suitably inscribed, which shall be recognised as a first class railway pass over the railways of this colony “ to the said W. S. Moorhousc and his descendants for ever.”
Wm Harris, aged 10*2, died at the Auckland Hospital on ,Saturday. Two important juxqiositions arc to be discussed at the forthcoming Licensed Victuallers Conference at Wellington;— One is to the effect that a Licensed Victuallers Fire Insurance Company be formed and the other affirms the desirability of forming an amalgamated Association for the whole colony, to be registered under the Friendly Societies Act. Field sports in Canterbury arc making rapid headway. Vie learn from Christchurch that ISd coursing licenses have been issued this season as against !)0 last year. Licenses have also been issued for three packs of beagles, one at Christchurch, one at Geraldine, and one at Timaru. Eighty-nine licenses for shooting pheasants have been taken out this season as against thirty-sis lust year.
Raphael's star troupe of gymnasts and acrobats appear this evening in the Queen’s Hall. The troupe consists of male and female performers, and although the Company is a small one they are decidedly clever. Their programme for this evening should attract a good house.
