NEW ZEALAND.

[Peu “ Times” Special Wiee.]

The Maori Prophets. New Plymouth, June 19. The Parihaka meeting closed last night. The number of natives was estimated at 300. Toliu and To Wbiti both spoke, and were both very earnest in their exhortations to their followers to restrain themselves under provocation, and keep the peace. The only way to succeed in their undertaking was to avoid war, no matter what provocation was given. A great deal of Scriptural language was used. The natives were told that the prophecies which related to the end of the world, alluded to the present time. The natives were the lords of (he world, said Tolm, and although they were troubled with an invasion, the burden was light in comparison with that carried by their adversaries, to whom live natives had proved themselves superior, and by avoiding war, and continuing to do so they would bo successful.

In veucai!Gili., June 19

A meeting of the Fastcrn District Reform Association has passed resolutions denouncing the property tax as wrong in principle, and urging that if retrenchment was fully carried out it would be unnecessary, but if further revenue was wanted, an income tax should be imposed. A resolution was also passed deprecating the stoppage of subsidies, and suggesting that the

exemption clauses in the Laud Tax Act should be extended to the Fating Act, thus allowing local bodies to exempt improvements.
