South Canterbury Times. FRIDAY, JUNE 18, 1880. NEWS OF THE DAY.

It will be observed from our English cable news that the Tirnani Waterworks Loan of £GO,OOO has been placed on the Loudon money market.

Our readers arc reminded of the Zealandia Variety' Troupe’s entertainment at the Theatre Royal, this evening. Mrs Thurlow Messrs Ryan and "Walker, song and dance artistes, Mr T. R. Kennedy, our well-known local comiquc, end a host of ethers too numerous to particularise. This array of talent should attract a full house.

The return football match, England v. the Colonics, takes place on Saturday. An alphabetical match has been arranged for the Saturday following.

The monthly parade of the Rocket Brigade took place last night. There was a capital attendance and the usual drill having been performed (under petty officer King-) several new members were elected and Mr Jackson was re-elected first lieutenant.

A gentlemen, well known in commercial circles in Timaru, called on ns yesterday with a countenance radient with pleasure, and a small parcel. At lust we imagined that he was about to exhibit some wonderful grain from Parcora, bat, to our surprise, ho produced some extraordinary specimens of “ corns ” which the llesh is heir to. One corn —a paternal looking monster—was of 81 years’ standing; while another, extracted from the sole of his foot, measured five inches inches in circumference, and had rendered him a partial cripple for thirty years. Altogether, out of a dozen huge favorites, nine had been removed without pain, in the brief space of live days, paid the remainder are in process of removal. The owner, who was beginning to look forward anxiously to employment of crutches, is now ready for a walking match, and his delight may be imagined. We need hardly add that the relief which he experiences, after a lifetime of agony, is due to Mr Basstian, the chiropodist. Mr Vincent Fyke’s Bill for the prohibition of public processions has been shelved, the members of the House considering that such a measure was quite uncalled for. A motion to the effect that it is the duty of the Government to purge the Commission of the Peace of all unsuitable persons, such as insolvents, sly-grog sellers, &c., has been carried in the Legislative Council.

The Government intend taking steps to secure the proper audit of the accounts of local bodies by competent public auditors.

It is proposed to give County Councils in counties where Hoad Boards have been merged, power to levy a rate up to ten per cent of the annual value of property.

There are about 11000 Civil Servants in New Zealand. It is proposed to reduce the number and to make an all round reduction of 12;V per cent in salaries. It is stated that the report of the Civil Service Commission will be of a very damaging character, that it recommends the instant dismissal of one high official one of the Railway Department on the ground of mismanagement and his connection with a manufacturing company and also the dismissal of another on the score of incompctency.
