STapier Criminal Sessions. Napier, June 15. At the Criminal sittings of the Supreme Court, Arthur Barnslc}'-, for forgery, was remanded for sentence. Later. Per forgery, Arthur Barnsley was sentenced to 4- years, and William George Hewson, for rape on a girl of eight } r ears of age, 2 years and 25 lashes. Brewers and Publicans. Wanganui, June 15. The brewers here have notified that publicans must pay the duty on beer before delivery. The licensed victuallers association have passed a resolution that the tax is unjust, and asks the local representatives to oppose it.

The medical officers have decided that the eases of sickness on board the s.s. Norfolk arc not sma!l-pox, and they recommend the release of the vessel from quarantine. The Norfolk leaves for Wellington and (Sydney on Thursday.

The Property I'ax denounced.

A largo meeting of settlers at Tbornbnry, near Riverton, denounced the property tax, suggesting the substitution of a moderate land tax, exempting improvements, and an income tax. The Judicial Slew Coach, The Supremo Court Grand Jury made a presentment re quarterly sittings instead of half yearly. In one case a prisoner against whom no bill has been returned, had been imprisoned over six months, and others for nearly six months. Rabbit Association. Ail Interim committee have been appointed for the purpose of framing a constitution for the Southland Babbiters Association. It objects to embrace the furtherance of the interests of members by pecuniary benefits in case of accident or sickness. A general meeting will be held on Monday next.
Gaol Enquiry,
Strode and Simpson, E.M.’s, have been appointed commissioners to enquire into the circumstances connected with the deatli of the prisoner Wilson at the Invercargill gaol, and the proceedings of McCulloch, IBM., at the inquest.
