rP ER “Times” Special Wiee.l An Attack on tbe Government.' Auckland, May 27. The Auckland members intend to make a combined attack on the Government early in the session, regarding the stoppage of railway reclamation. Tne Auckland Vote. The Waimate County Council hare been notified by Mr Whitaker that £4OOO will bo appropriated out of the £65,000 voted for North Auckland, on the undertaking by the chairman that the money will be expended only on works contemplated by the rote. Coal Beposits, The reported discovery of coal at Maturanga proves to be very valuable. Fire Signals. _ The City Council last evening decided to send to England for twelve sets of electric fire alarms, together with a telephone. Entertained. - Sergt. Major Mason was entertained at a farewell banquet prior to leaving for Christchurch. Political. Mr Harris, M.H.R., received a vote of confidence at Hawick. In reply to a question, he said he would oppose Sir George Grey’s proposal for an elective Governor. Railway Agitators. The Railway Commissioners received a deputation from Cambridge, who urged that the traffic to Cambridge was equal to two-fifths of the whole of the Waikato carrying trade. Mr Whitaker, M.H.R., urged the construction of the second section, ns far as the navigation of the Thames so as to establish communication with Kati Ivati. Mr Sheehan said the main line of railway to Wellington must pass through Cambridge, by the cast coast, and down Ito Wanganui river. The Commission then took evidence on oath. Municipal Subsidies. The City Council last night resolved to cb-opcrato with other municipal bodies to bring pressure to bear on the Government to secure a continuance of subsidies.
Important Sweep Case. Napier, May 27. In the District Court case, Ellis against Lauronson, a claim for £55, judgment went for defendant. This was an interesting case to sporting men, Laurenson drew Grand Duchess in the Derby Sweep for the Tradesman’s Cup, at last Hawke’s Bay races. Ellis agreed to buy Laurenson’s ticket for £25, and an agreement was drawn out and signed by both parties and stamped. The ticket was also endorsed to the same effect. Grand Duchess proving to be only starter entitled the owner of the ticket to £IOO. Lauronson then instructed the holder of the sweep money not to pay Ellis, and Laurenson received the money himself, hence the action. The judgment has caused considerable surprise. Sly Grog 1 Selling. Wellington, May 27. At the Magistrate’s Court, Glcich, alias Fisher, was prosecuted on six charges of sly grog selling, and was, on two charges, lined £2O each. The others were dismissed. Kailway Slip. The rain of the last two days caused another slip on the Wcllington-Groy-town line this morning. Direct communication was interrupted, but trains run as far as the slip and exchange passengers. Marks versus Moses. CnuisTcnuucn:, May 27. “ Wicked” Marks, the fruiterer, was summoned to-day for selling on Sundays. Mr Joynt defended, and judgment was deferred till to-morrow. liondon Wool Sales. Dunedin, May 27. Cargill’s wool telegram, dated May 25, says :—“ Since last telegrams there is no change for the bulk of wool.” Jk Keeper Cautioned. At the inquest on Jameson, who was tilled by a railway train, a verdict of of accidental death was returned ; but the crossing keeper was cautioned to keep a better look out for the future.
