[By Telegraph.] GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE MEETING. [erom our own reporter.] Christchurch, May 24. The weather was splendid and there was an excellent attendance on the racecourse. The events excited a fair amount of speculation. Considerable delay took place in getting oil the first race'. The New Zealand Grand National Handicap, of 200 sovs, with a sweepstake of 5 sovs each for acceptors, to go to the second horse ; distance, 4 miles. Mr P. Betting—2 to 1 The Agent, 4 to 1 against the others. all the fences were got over in the (List round, Barwon leading throughout. After passing the stone wall opposite the Stand in the second round, the coiner fence stuck all up with the exception of Barca, Banjo, Agent, and Royalty, who, from this jump, were the only ones in the race. Nearing the double jump opposite the Stand, Royalty and Agent passed Banjo. Agent taking second place. Turning in the straight for home, Agent headed Baron,_ who was quite beaten, and at the last jump, Royalty passed him, and also came up under the w'hip behind Agent. A. splendid race ensued from the d 1 ’ stance post, but RoyaLy had too much taken out of him, and although he struggled gamely along, Agent landed an easy 'winner by a length. Time —10 min. 39secs. The first and second horses were loudly cheered on returning to the scale, after the race. Lonehand was purchased by Mv G. H. Thompson for £250, to go back to Australia, ou commission from Corrigan, Its old rider.

Betting—G to 4 Clarence, 2 to 1 Venture, 3 to 1 Stella, 5 to 7 against the others. Clarence fell when looking well. Venture assumed the lead threequarters of a mile from home, and was never headed. Hunt Clue Cur, of 150 sovs, added to a sweepstake of 5 sovs each, for acceptors, to go to second horse; weight for age ; amateur riders allowed 71b ; the winner of the Crand National Handicap to cany 101 b penalty ; distance, 3 miles. Loneliand, Harkaway, Royally, Mickey Free, and Little John weic scratched. Bavon and Grey Momus led past the stand, folioweil by Agent. At the jump opposite the stand Laron fell. Grey Monins followed suit at the next jump, leaving Agent by himself who went away with a long lead,;M agio following, and coming up to the straight for the first time in the following order :—Agent, Magic, Grey Momus. Nearly opposite the stand Grey Momus took ‘second place, ’ but Magic again passed Lim and chased after the winner. At the jump ut the fur side of the
course Magic came down heavily, injuring his rider slightly. Agent then came away easily landing the winner by along distance,Grey Momus second.

The following were the investments in the totalisators during the day : Hill’s £2 sweep on the Grand National, twenty-live shares, four investors on the winners; Hobbs and Goodman’s £1 sweep, ninety shares, forty-one on the winner. Maiden Plate—Hill’s £1 sweep, fifty-three shares, twelve on the winner. Hobbs’, 211 shares, forty-five on the winner. Cup—Hill’s £1 sweep, live shares, three on the winner. Hobb’s. 354 shares, G 7 on the winner.

Maud led at the start, hut at little more than half a mile Sir William went through his horses and won by a length Concrete, who was second, making a vain attempt to get up ou the inside. Time —3miu. ssccs. Tradesmen’s Handicap of 50 sovs ; one mile and a distance ; the winner of the Birthday Handicap to cany 71b extra. Shaw’s ch c Adamant, by Traducer— .. Blue Peter led at the start, but the race was really between Adamant and York. Adamant was well ridden, and won by about a length. Time—2min. 12^-scc. Consolation Handicap of 20 sovs ; one mile. York, Sst 51b 1 B'uo Peter, 7st 121 b .. .. ..2 Spey, sst 101 b 3 A Hurry Scurry was won by Mr Hamilton’s Swagman, beating four others. TAPANUI RACES. Birthday Handicap. Mcnybird 1 Atlantic ... ... ... ... 2 Captain Douglas 3 Hurdles. Sultan 1 Tory Boy 2 Novel Race. Mountain 80y... ... 1 The weather was fine but the attendance was small. WANGANUI RACES. Wanganui, May 25. On the racecourse about 220 persons were present. The Schooling Steeplechase at Aramoho attracted some sportsmen. The Birthda} r Handicap was won by King Don, Ireland 2nd. and Eclipse 3rd; six started. Black Prince won the Produce Steeplechase, and King Don the Maiden Steeplechase.
