At a meeting of the Catholic Union in London, the Huko Norfolk presented Cardinal Newman with the salver subscribed for him iu Sydney, and made from Australian gold. The Cardinal replied warmly thanking his Australian friends.
May 15. Owing to the disturbances caused by rioters at Eoubaix and elsewhere, the military have been employed preserving order/ ;
' Thirty, thousand operatives have struck at Blackburn. It is hoped the dispute will shortly be arranged. An impetus has been given to the shipping trade, in of the enormous emigration to America from Great Britain and Germany. There are increasing indications of Abdul Eahman’s desire to arrange with the British in Afghanistan. May! 2 . The state of affairs in the districts of Roumolia is causing much anxiety. Bands of Bulgarian soldiers have been indulging in the utmost excesses in defiance of the authorities, and have, in numerous instances, assailed the Mohomedan population. Intelligence has been received that nine Turkish villages have been attacked, given up to pillage, the women outraged, and the males, young and old, slaughtered without mercy. The famine in the provinces of Persia, owing to the failure of the late harvest and the [oppressive system .of govcin ment, is daily extending. The rural population have been left without means of subsistence, and GOO deaths have occurred from the effects of starvation. May 13. The health of the Empress of Russia continues critical, and according to the latest intelligence very little hope is entertained of her recovery. Bradlaugh has addressed a written protest to the House of Commons against the decision of the election committee. The question raised is exciting considerable interest. Prince Leopold has left England for Canada, where ho will remain for a time the guest of the Governor-General and his sister, the Princess Louise. The Prince purposes making a tour of Canada and the Western States. The strikes amongst the operatives at Blackburn and Oldham, in Lancashire, are assuming serious proportions, and greatly interfere with the state of trade. Several mills have been closed, and thousands of; men are out of employment. Much disgust has been occasioned by the state of affairs in Turkey, which, it is feared will lead to the re-opening of' the Eastern question. The Albanians arc in arms and have offered- a forcible resisance to the attempts made by Montenegro to occupy the territory ceded under the Treaty of Berli.n. Acting under pressure from the Powers, the Grand Vi/der has exerted bis authority to prevent a further conflict between Albania and Montenegro, but up to the present without success. May 14. Mr Goscbcn, Special Ambassador, has been instructed to proceed- first to the principal European Courts in order to confer with the Powers upon the position of affairs. Ho will visit Paris, Berlin and Vienna in order to ascertain the views of the foreign Ministers and arrange for the carrying out of the unsettled provisions of the Berlin Treaty. There is great indignation in Ireland Ow ;, ig to the proposal of the Gladstone Government to have recourse to coercive measures in dealing with the political and agrarian agitation. Home Rule meetings have been held, denouncing a renewal of the system of repression contemplated, and violent attacks have been made upon the Ministry by the national press. The authorities remain firm, and intend to prosecute in flagrant instances of sedition. Intelligence lias been received of a serious defeat inflicted upon the Chillians whilst advancing upon Moquehua. They were entrapped by an ambuscade and outnumbered. Having to fight at great disadvantage they were defeated with heavy loss. The feeling of irritation between Austria and England caused by Gladstone’s indictment of the Austrian policy has been allayed by the explanation offered by the Premier. Austria will be prepared to co-operate with England in any measure calculated to bring about a satisfactory settlement of Turkish affairs. May 16. The Irish. Homo Eule members Rave held a meeting to consider the line of v fiicy they will adopt in the new Parliament. They have elected Parnell leader, jjand resolved systematically to press upon the Imperial parliament the redress of Irish grievances. ■ Intelligence has been received at Madrid of a serious outbreak in Cuba.
