A DISORDERLY MEETING.
A meeting of the South Dunedin . ratepayers was held on Monday night to consider the proceedings of the Borough Council. The Chairman, Mr JNaumann, a local publican, explained • that the Council, by their vagaries, had become a public laughing stbck. As the difficulty had arisen over the refusal of the Mayor (Mr Maloney) to ; sign the minutes of a special meeting, it was moved and seconded that the Mayor be requested to sign the ; records or resign 1 his seat. An amendment was proposed that the Mayor and councillors be asked to resign. This led to a stormy discussion, Towards the conclusion of ,the debate, it was intimated that the Mayor intended to adjourn the meeting he had called to the hall.
A Ratepayer—-Why did he not call it in a proper place ? Another—Shut up, or I will “go ” for you. A general uproar ensued, but the “shut up” gentleman made himself heard. Mr Scott —Considering the sort of crowd we have in this municipality, I think the sooner it is dissolved the better. Mr Perkins—l will second that. A ratepayer began to speak, but was stopped with the warning that if ho did not shut up he would have a finger put in his eye. .Mr Dundon—l beg to move that we hang the Mayor, and give the mayorship to Mr M‘Bride.
The Chairman—l cannot put that motion. r||i A Ratepayer—l will move that he be the hangman.—(Applause.) Mr Shacklock—Mr Chairman and
fellow townsmen, Ido not know whether I can call you all gentlemen, I may say in the first place that if you have any consideration for speakers |you ought to stop from smoking.
Disorder ensued, and it was an-’ nounced that the next song would be a dance. The amendment calling on the Mayor and Council to resign was ultimately put and lost, and the original motion was carried.
An indescribable row followed, and the proceedings were brought to a close.
