For Dunedin — Mr Austin and six steerage. The following summary of Australian news is up to 3lay 12th : NEW SOUTH WALES. During yesterday's gale the ketch Seabird capsized oft - Bird Island on the coast near Newcastle. One seaman was drowned, and two others with the master were rescued by a passing stesrncr. Diptheria is prevalent at Ripstone ; thirteen deaths have occurred. The Assembly carried a motion brought by a private member, affirming that it is undesirable that grants of lands for church-building or religious purposes should be continued in future. Ministers voted against the resolution. The Irish Relief Fund has reached £28,000. V [UTOPIA. Owing to the Newcastle strike, the scarcity of coal in Melbourne almost amounts to a famine. Stocks arc so low that contracts have had to be suspended, and the (las Company arc short. A large meeting has been held in the Town Hall, on the Chinese question, and to protest against the action of the Exhibition Commissioners in reversing the decision restricting the chair contract to articles made by European workmen. Three thousand were present, and Berry, Woods, Vales, and other Members of Parliament took part in the proceedings. Resolutions were passed appointing vigilance committees to watch future elections, and to take further action. Allison, an employee at the Theatre Royal, is dying from tetanus caused by a trilling wound of the thumb, inflicted by the wadding of a pistol which was fired on the stage. Steps have been taken to erect a monument to Batman, the founder of the colony, also, to Bates, the actor. The new exchange is well supported. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. The totalisator went wrong at last race meeting. On the lirst day the machine registered only £7O received instead of £AOO. On the second day.all the totals were disconnected and incorrect when the dividend was issued, the machine registering only £lbG for the winner, whereas more than 17-1 tickets were issued. At Morphetville races the derangement of the instrument caused a mistake which cost the Club £IOO.
