[Pee “Times” Special Wise.] The Financial Position* Auckland, May 17. Mr Moss has written a financial paper in one of the daily papers. He disclaims any party bias, and ascribes the origin of the present difficuty to the Ministers who were in office prior to the Grey Government. He argues that the whole of the available revenue, including the land tax, is only sufficient to pay permanent charges, and leaves a balance of .£205,000. He argues that taxation cannot be reduced. He advocates eentralization and a return to provincialism as a remedy. An Eventftil Voyage, During the passage of the Loch Dee, which arrived yesterday, from London, one passenger committed suicide, and three fell overboard and were drowned, A Fatal Spree. Wellington, May 17. At an inquest to-day, on the body found in the harbor on Saturday, the remains were identified as those of Peter W. Earl, who was last seen about two days ago. He had been drinking heavily. A verdict of “Pound Drowned ” was returned. Political. It is understood that the Premier pays a short visit to Canterbury for the purpose of addressing his constituents before Parliament meets. He will probably leave to-morrow. Otago Building Society. Dunedin, May 17. A considerable deficicnc in Webb’s accounts w r ith the Otago Building Society has been discovered. Harrow Escape. Invercaegill, May 17. On Saturday morning a small cottage at Lurasdcn, occupied by two lads,
engine cleaners, was observed in flames. On an entrance being effected the occupants wore found insensible from the effects of the smoke, and were rescued only with difficulty. The cottage was destroyed.
