At a meeting of tho Board of Governors of the grammar school today Mr O’Rorkc moved, and tho Mayor seconded a resolution “ That in th o matter of university education Auckland is at a great disadvantage compared with the south, and that a college should he established iu Auckland with a staff of profesiors. The City Council last night struck a rate of ninepenco in tho pound and a special x’ate of Is 3d. frightful Railway Accident. Edward Walsh, nephew of the Caldwell station master at Hamilton, passed from the guards van to a passenger carriage, while the Waikato train was in motion, and fell off. The driver of the engine returned and found Walsh lying unconscious near the line, with his left leg smashed close to the groin, and his right leg broken below tho knee. Walsh died in a few hours. Deceased was only married on Sunday last. The progress of the railway to To Awamatu is causing a great rise iu tho price of land.
