C..1.G. HALF-YEARLY MEETING-,

The half-yearly meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club was held on Saturday afternoon. The recommendation of the D.J.O. to remove the disqualification from McKay, the steeplechase rider, was declined. The balance sheet submitted showed an overdraft of £246, caused by the committee clearing off the balance of the whole of the cost of the railway, line to the course, which amounted to £3135 13s. The railway had earned £1267. For the two meetings during the year £4562 Is had been paid away in stakes. Among the remarks made it was stated that a Sydney architect had been instructed to provide plans for a new grand stand, to give seating accommodation for a thousand persons, and to have a sloping lawn in front which would allow the races to be seen by another thousand, to cost about £3OOO. A resolution was passed instructing the incoming committee to take immediate steps for the construction of the stand consequent on their being able to make the requisite financial arrangements. The following' notice of motion was given for next meeting “ That a hamlicappcr be appointed at a substantial salary to attend the various race meetings in the colony, who will neither own, back, or be in any way interested in the running of horses, and that the appointment be made with the co-opcration of the leading clubs in the colony who arc willing to engage the services of the gentleman so appointed.”
