The Channel Squadron has been despatched to the Azores in search for Her Majesty’s ship Atalanta, training ship, which succeeded the Eurydicc when the latter was lost. Nothing has been heard of the Atalanta for 72 days ; her crew numbered 300 souls. April IG. The contest for the representation of County Cork was an exciting one. Colonel Cuulthnr.st and Mr William Shaw, the former members, and both Home Rulers, were supported by four bishops and one hundred priests, and were returned lay a large majority, heating Mr Kettle, the Parnellite candidate. Mr Parnell lias been elected for three seats. A compromise has been effected in the Bagot will case, the mother and minor receiving £33,000 and their law costs. The Empress Eugenic, accompanied by Sir Evelyn and Lady Wood, has arrived at Cape Town in good health. She purposes proceeding immediately to Natal, and from thence to the spot where the Prince Imperial was killed. April 17.
It is reported that an unsuccessful attempt has been made to poison the Emperor of liussia. Twenty-seven addresses from Belgians have been presented to Mr Gladstone.
The new German Army Bill, which proposes to add annually about 30,000 men to the forces of the empire, is being eagerly discussed in the lleichslag. The Bill provides for the creation of eleven new regiments of infantry, fortybatteries of artillery, and one battallion of engineers, causing an increased annual outlay of over one million pounds. A telegram from San Francisco states that on Saturday last a terrible explosion occiu’red in the town of Berkely, California, by which a gunpowder manufactory was blown up and thirty persons killed. A large number of persons were seriously injured. The disaster is said to have been caused by the negligence of one of the employees.
