MURDER IN OAMARU GAOL.
On Friday night last, a woman of loose character, atOamaru, named Julia Paul, was locked up mad drunk, and had to be held by three constables and straight-jacketed. Next day she was brought before the bench and sentenced to eight days’ imprisonment. At 7.1-5 she went to bed with her baby. At 3.38 on Sunday morning, the gaoler was aroused by loud cries from her cell, and with two other constables he proceeded to the spot. On opening the door they saw prisoner dashing her infant against the stone wall. At their entry she dropped the child on the floor and it expired in a few seconds. They secured the prisoner again, and Dr Garland was sent for, though his services were unavailing, the child being beyond [restoration.
