'Hie result is that there is a good deal of speculative enquiry in our local market, and prices shew a decided disposition to improve. Notwithstanding the fact that a couple of vessels have visited this port chartered direct for Great Britain, a largo quantity of Igrain is finding its way by rail and sailing vessels to Lyttelton, ’.Dunedin, Wellington _ and Auckland, where it will bo transhipped and despatched abroad. The news from Victoria respecting the scarcity of oats m that colony and llio resolution of the Government to withdraw the import duty from that article has made the market somewhat Jinn, and farmers arc generally holding back in the expectation of securing a much better figure than is now obtainable. Quotations arc as follows:—Wheat, inferior, 3s fd to :?s ;)d, prime, 3s lOd to 4s Id ; oats, ls-2d to Is Id ; malting barley, 3s to 8s Gd; potatoes, 412 10s to Til. Dunedin, April IG.
