BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE. SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the Timaru branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society was held last night in the Oddfellows’ Hall. His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair. The proceedings were opened in the usual way, prajmr being offered up by the Rev. Mr Hallowcs.

The Chairman made some suitable remarks on the value of the Bible, after which the Secretary M. D. Haggott road the annual report. It acknowledged the services in the interests of the Society in Timaru of the various clergymen of the town, Mesdamcs A, Hart, J. H. Simmons, J. G. Cowan, D. Haggett. and Miss Brown. The report also stated that <£6o Is had been received during the year as subscriptions and donations, and 5s from sale of Bibles. Since April last, Mr Yardley of Woollcombc' street had made his shop the depository of the Society’s books for the district.

On the motion of Mr Granger, seconded by Mr Robinson, the report was adopted. The Rev. Mr Gillies moved—“ That this meeting desires to acknowledge with devout gratitude the goodness of God in the blessing which has rested upon the Society’s labors during the past year, ami appeals to all to whom God’s word is precious for enlarged sympathy and support.” The speaker referred at length to the objects, aims, and achievements of the Society in different parts of the world, and especially in France.

The Rev. Mr Simmons seconded the resolution which was earned. The Rev. J. Dumbell moved—“ That the thanks of this meeting be given to Mr Haggett. the Secretary and Treasurer, the Collectors, and to Mr Yardley for his kind superintendence of the Bible Society’s depot in Timaru.” On the motion of Mr Jones, seconded by Mr T. Smith—“Mr D. Haggett was re-elected Secretary and Treasurer for the ensuing year.” Anol her hymn having been sung, and a cordial vote of thanks accorded to the chair, the meeting terminated.
