ADJOURNED INQUEST.
The inquest on the body of Wilson, a prisoner who recently died in the Southland gaol, was resumed yesterday. W. Fraser, tho Governor of the gaol, was recalled and deposed that the deceased was allowed the usual rations for prisoners pretending to be ill. He denied that tho prisoners bedding had been taken away for punishment. Nathan Porter, gave evidence showing that the deceased repeatedly complained of being ill. During the time he did so he was put down as a malingerer, though he never complained of the gaol officials illtreating him. The witness had shown that the deceased was very bad. Dr Dutton, the gaol surgeon deposed that on March 6th the deceased complained of pains in his chest. The witness examined him carefully and found nothing wrong. He continued to complain, and on the 17th, witness again examined him, hut found nothing the matter with him. He then entered in the books that he was perfectly fit for work. On the 27th another examination took place, and still finding him all right, he entered him as a malingerer. That was the last time he saw the deceased before bis death, which occurred on the 6th April. Dr Hanna, who made a post movtciii examination, said the deceased died from breast pangs, the sjunptoms of which were exceedingly hard to detect. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased died from natural causes.
