Loxno.v, March 31. _ Mr Gladstone, despite the fact of his contest for Midlothian, has boon returned for Leeds Avith a majority of over 11,000 votes, one of the greatest triumphs of the Liberals. Sir Charles Dilke, one of the prominent members of the Radical party, lias been returned by a large majority, and the second scat was wrested from the Conservatives. The O’Donoglme, a prominent Irish member, who lias lately given in his adhesion to the Homo Rule party, has been again returned for Tralee. Lord Derby, in a letter to his tenants, supports the Liberals. Earl Grey, in a letter, expresses distrust of the Liberals, and of Mr Gladstone’s leadership. Admiral Sir John Hay, Bart., a Conservative, and old member for Stamford, has been defeated.
Mr Barth wick, proprietor of the “ Morning Post,” who stood in the Conservative interest, has been rejected. ' April 3. Much surprise is expressed by the Continental Press at the defeat of the Bcaconsfield Government.
The Success of the Liberals has created a bad impression at Berlin and AGenna, ns it is feared the accession of Mr Gladstone to power will mean tlio breaking up of the entente cordiale between England Austria, and Germany, in the settlement of affairs in the East.
A courier, despatched by the Eussian Ambassador at Paris, was arrested on his arrival at St Petersburg on suspicion of being implicated in the Nihilist conspiracy. The health of the Emperor of Germany is causing much anxiety. He is seriously indisposed. A proposition has been submitted for the construction of a grand canal between the City of Bordeaux and the town of Nardonue, upon the Gulf of Lyons. April 5. The new Parliament is expected to meet on the 29th inst. The death is announced of Lord Eivcrs, (Lc patron of the Tichbornc claimant. The returns of ,’tho elections completed give the following result: — Liberals, 375 ; Tories, 110.
■'■■’Much excitement. h-as been occasioned throughout Ireland by the discovery of a diabolical plot to seriously injure, if not to murder, a candidate for Parliament. Mr Gray who was contesting the scat for Carlow, had arranged to address a meeting at Borris or Burrisdronc. Before the meeting had assembled it was discovered that a quantity of dynamite had been placed under the platform, with the evident intention of blowing the candidate and his supporters into the air. Fortunately a timely discovery frustrated the plot. The utmost indignation prevails at the attempted outrage, which is assigned to bitterness arising from political animosity. !St. Pktrrsuurg, April 2. The health of the Empress of Eussia since her return from Mannes has been in a declining stale. The change of climate failed to afford her the least relief. By the latest advices no hopes arc enterteined of her recovery.
