THE DEATH OF TEMPLETON.
TOWN EDITION.
“ Sinbad ” in the “ Press ” thus relates the circumstances connected with the death of “ Templeton ”: Mr Bay took him out for a final trial on the private training ground of Messrs Mason and Vallancc, at Yaldhurst. On arrival it would appear there were some cows feeding about the course. These were driven by Mr Bay into the centre, and not anticipating they would again come on to the course, the old horse was started on what was destined to be his final gallop. He was very fit, and, pulling double, he started on his journey. Before a quarter of a mile had been covered one of the cows came on the course, and the boy who was riding Templeton thinking she would move on his approaching her, kept on and collided with the cow. The lad got a very hcav3 r fall, and poor old Templeton fractured his leg and shoulder. As recovery was hopeless Mr Bay requested Mason his old traiucr to shoot him. die was then carried to Crisis Lodge, the residence of his owner, and was buried alongside his old opponent Tamburini. It seems strange that the old horse should have met his death on the ju’opcrty were he was foaled, and where in the hands of Mr Dolamain, he went so many gallops when in preparation for victories which arc now historical in the annals of the New Zealand turf. In the death of Templeton Mr Bay suffers a severe loss. From the way in which the horse had been going it would seem that he had more than a good chance of winning the Autumn Handicap, but apart from this, he would have made a more than useful horse at the stud. He is a loss not only to his owner but to New Zealand, and take him altogether I think it will bo a long time before we look upon his like again.
