A MODEL GOVERNOR.

An , American gentleman at present passing through Dunedin supplies a contemporary with the following pen-and-ink sketch of the Dunedin Goal and its Governor: —“ In company with a distinguished ‘ old identity,’ I visited Governor Caldwell’s hotel, and although somewhat prepared to see a properconducted institution, my expectations were more than realised. The Governor undoubtedly knows how to keep a hotel. The whole place has an air of cleanliness and freshness about it which some other hotels would do well to emulate. The culinary department is well managed. A cauldron of tempting porridge was being prepared for the evening meal, and the Governor’s invitation to 1 take a hack at it ’ was onlyrefused because he had just dined. I say, to the credit of this Gaol, that no better bread have I seen in Dunedin than the article produced therein. Thb Governor’s guests have no reason to complain in the food line. I have visited larger institutions than this one, but for discipline, food, and cleanliness, the Governor need not haul down his flag to any of them. As for the Governor himself, instead of a grim-visaged Charon or Cerberus, or some ‘ pomposity ’ clothed in a little brief authority, and who delights in showing it, we find him a kind-hearted gentleman, with amex’ry twinkle (SantaClause like) in his eye, replete with humor, full of anecdotal reminiscences of gaol experience, and acting the part not of the tyrant, but that of a benevolent man, who, whilst doing his duty, controls the unfortunates under his care as does the father with his wayward child.”
