THE UNEMPLOYED IN CANADA.

It seems the working men of Canada are not much better off than the unemplojmd in Dunedin. The Canadian papers blame assisted immigration foxdoing the demage and the Government of the Dominion have passed a statute prohibiting passengers from landing unless they had a certain of dollars in their pockets. The following which we clip from the weekly “ Globe ” of Feb. 7, may bo read with profit by some of the dissatisfied in New Zealand:—lt was thought by the working men of the country that when the contracts were let for sections 33 and 34, Welland Canal, there would be any amount of woi-lc for them to do ; accordingly they came to the, small village of Stonybriclge in swarms, only to find that the work had not started yet.. On Monday of the week before last there were over fifty without a place wherein to stay, and forms could have been seen crouched in doorways, on side-walks, and in fence corners. They also became thirsty and hungry, and were compelled to beg for something to cat. The residents became tired of handing out eatables for so many, and the men, becoming very hungx-y, on Wednesday held a sort of meeting, at which it was determined to ask for tilings to cat, and if refused, to force their wishes in some way. The Reeve of the township, upon being advised by many of the residents, telegraphed to Magis •tratc Hill, of Clifton, to send up the police force under his charge, as things were in a very dangerous state. The town hall was thrown open meanwhile for the destitute working men to stay in at nights.”
