OAMAEU RACES. [By Telegraph.l FROM OUR SPECIAL REPORTER. First Day—Wednesday, March 17. The first event took place at one o’clock. The course is in a passable condition ; but the attendance is small at present. There are a few bookmakers and two totalisators on the ground, but they are badly patronised. Handicap Hurdle Race of 40 so vs. ; 2 miles ; over eight flights of 3ft 6in hurdles. J. Cotton’s Thilo .. .. .. .. 1 H. Schluter’s Little John .. .. 2 W. Maitland’s Shillelagh .. .. 3 Little John and Shillelagh took the first hurdle together leaving, Thilo behind. At the seventh hurdle the horses were together, Thilo havingput on a spurt. A hard race ensued, TMlo eventually getting the lead and winning by a good half length. Time—4min. 17sec. Hack Selling Hurdle Race of 20 sovs. ; over hurdles ;If miles ; no weights under 9st ; winner to be sold for £2O, surplus to the Club. Theodore 1 Wild Rose • • ; • 2 This race was won easily. The winner was bought by his owner for £2O. HAWKES BAY RACES. The following concludes our report of yesterday’s Races. The Hawke’s Bay Cup of 30 sovs. Mr Vallance’s Vampire, Cst 51b, including 51b penalty .. .. (Webster) 1 Mr Walters’ Libeller, 7st 31b (Taylor) 2 Mr Renata Kawepo’s Otupai (Native) 3 Mr Butler’s Laertes and Numa were scratched. Betting—3 and 4tol on Vampire, 5 to 1 against Libeller, 5 to 1 agst Otupai, 25 to I agst Grand Duchess. The race requires no description. Vampire made all the running, and won, bard held, by a length. Grand Duchess pulled up after going 100 yards, and returned to the paddock. Ladies’ Purse, of 40 sovs. Mr Walters’Billingsgate, 10st .. .. 1 Mr Murray’s Tamatea, list 41b .. .. 2 Betting—2 to 1 on Billingsgate. District Plate, of 50 sovs. Mr Murray’s Mavis .. .. • • 1 Mr Lyon’s Numa 2 Mr Douglas’ Rawenata .. ..‘ • • 3 Eight started. Consolation Handicap, of 25 sovs. Mr MTvor’s Loch Lomond, 9st Bib . . 1 Mr Lyon’s Numa .. 2 Mr Donnelly’s Rangokuko .. .. 3 Betting—2 to Ibn Loch Lomond, even agst Numa, 3 to 1 agst Barigoknko. Numa was first away slightly in advance of Ihmgokuko. Half a mile from home Loeli '’Lomond went up, and a capital race ensued between the three, and when m the straight Loch Lomond drew away and won easily. Second Day — Wednesday, Mar. 17. maiden plate.
