TIJIAKU—THIS DAT. (Before His Worship the Mayor aud B. Wooilcombo Esq. J.P.) DRUNK. Two inebriates, who had been previously convicted, were fined respectively os, or 21 hours’ iinjirisonmcut, aud 2s, with Is cab hire. EMBEZZLEMENT. Henry Thomas Held was charged on a warrant issued in Australia, with embezzling on Oct. 20, 1877, £l5O, the monies of the Warrambool Permanent Building and Investment Society. On the application of Inspector Pender, who stated that an oJlicer with the depositions had just arrived from Victoria, the proceedings were adjourned for half an hour. The following evidence was taken : Jeremiah Cronan deposed—l am a constable stationed at Warrambool in the Western Bailiwick of Victoria. I was there in 1876 and 1877, and knew the accused. Ho was then town clerk, and secretary of the Warnambool Permanent Investment and Building Society. Ho disappeared from the neighbourhood in August, 1877. I arrested him to day in the Police Yard ou a warrant produced. It is signed by It. B. Paterson, a Magistrate in Victoria, and was issued on March I. I was present when the depositions on which the warrant was issued were taken, and I produce copy of them. The accused declined to put any questions to the ollicer, and intimated that lie was only too willing to facilitate matters. Accused was committed to gaol till such time as it might be convenient to transfer him* to Victoria. The Bench declined his application for bail on (he ground that he was charged with felony, not misdemeanour.
