[Per “Times” Special Wire.] Native I>and Court. Auckland, March 16.—The Government have arranged to retain the seiv vices of Judge Johnston as chief Judge of the Native Land Court. This has given much satisfaction. ' Thames Deputations. Ehrenfried and McGregor, of the Thames, and Mr Sheehan, M.H.R.r waited on the Hons. Hall and Rolloston and requested, a reimbursement of £2300 alleged to have been wrongfully deducted from the sum supplied to the borough during the last three years for charitable purposes. They also requested tbe Government to refund £SOO promised by Mr Sheehan when Native Minister, and expended by the Thames people on the faith of that promise. The matter was referred to Mr Bryce. The deputation also applied to have the Orphanage proclaimed under the “Neglected Criminal Children’s Act, 1867.” Mr Rolleston agreed to arrange if. The fourth application was re fulfilment of an agreement made by the Provincial Government to transfer Grahamstown and Tararu tramway to the postal authorities. An inquiry was promised. Docal Industries. Wellington, March, 16. —At a meeting of the Local Industries Commission Mr Wakefield was appointed chairman. It was resolved to send circulars to the various Chambers of Commerce asking them to make any suggestions they consider necessary to aid industries already in existence, and for developing new ones. An Identity Gone. John Wallace, an old settler, died this morning. He was in his 93rd year. Dondon Wool Sales. The Loan and Mercantile Agency report under date London, March 13. The!/wool sales closed firmly at an average improvement of l|d to 2d per lb. We expect next sales to open at present quotations. Superior greasy has advanced to 2d ; scoured, 2d to 3d ; superior combings, washed, Id to lid ; combing, washed, 2d ; clothing, washed, Id. Since the close of last sale, cross-breds, greasy combing washed and scoured have each advanced 3d per lb. Forced to be Dutiful. Christchurch, March 16. —William and Alfred Hall, on remand, were again charged at the Police Court with failing to support their mother. The former was ordered to pay four siblings per week and the latter eight shillings. Spoliation of Westland. Dunedin, March 16. —A. J. O’Connor engineer at Westland, has been transferred to Dunedin as assistant to Mr Blair. Incendiarism. Joseph Jones has been arrested for arson at North East harbor. Journalistic. [from our own correspondent.] Christchurch, March 16.—The new evening paper appears on Monday next, and will be called the “ Echo.” It is being worked by five of the late employees of the “ Press” newspaper. It is not unlikely that a morning paper will be started shortly with influential supporters.
