NEW SOUTH WALES. The dispute between the Assembly and the Council is still unsettled. An amendment in the Stamp Bill was moved in the Council by Mr Stewart, one of the six new members sent there bj r Sir H. Parkes to strengthen the Government. Sir H. Parkes states the Government advise that the Stamp Act will have no retrospective effect, consequently the Council’s amendment is unnecessary. The grand Agricultural Exhibition at the Garden Palace was not very successful. A number of gentlemen have tested the experiment of preserving meat by Jaunisch’s patent, which is to preserve in a salt. A cask of meat packed in this salt at Berlin, recently arrived, when opened was found in splendid condition, and had the appearance of being fresh killed. It is said fruit, milk, butter, fish, and game can be just as easily preserved as meat, and the patent salt is as cheap as ordinary salt. A movement is on foot amongst those interested, in the Illawarra district, to form a company for the purpose of establishing milk condensing works on a large scale. Their intention is to raise a capital of £SOOO to erect machinery capable of condensing 2000 gallons per day, yielding 511 dozen one pint tins.
