THE ASHBURTON LIBEL CASE.
The prosecution of Joseph Ivess, of the Ashburton “ Mail,” for criminal libel, at the hands of E. S. Crisp, was continued on Saturday. The witnesses examined were C. W. Truckle, a board* ing-house keeper, who said he received a summons ferrates, with 6s for writing the application attached, but he did not pay the costs ; Mr Hurrell, clerk of Court, who proved that Os costs had been added to amounts clue for rates which were sued for; H. Friecllander, formerly rate collector, who said he referred the defaulting ratepayers to Borough solicitor Crisp, but did not instruct him to charge Os for writing letters demanding paj'ment; Thomas Bullock, ex-Mayor, who stated that the Council had passed a resolution, disapproving of Crisp’s demands ; C. W. Ireland, solicitor, who considered the article in the “ Mail ” very damaging, and the charge for letter writing justifiable and reasonable, and G. St. Hill and I). Williamson, both Councillors,who proved the vote of
censure,passed on the Borough solicitor. His Worship (Mr F. Guinness, P.M.), considered a prima fade ease had been made out, and committed the defendant for trial at the Supreme Court. Bail allowed in his own recognisance of £IOO.
