NAVIGATION OF THE UPPER THAMES.
The opening of the Thames for navigation as far as Matamata was celebrated’by a banquet yesterday, to which the Premier was invited. About 200 persons sat down to dinner, during a drenching rain, in a galvanised iron structure. The promoter of the work, Mr Firth pi-esided supported by the Hon John Hall and Mr Whitaker, In response “to the Health of the Premier,” Mr Hall congratulated the people of the district on their enterprise complimented the soil on its fertility gratefully acknowledged the services of Mir Firth as a river-opener, and after a passing allusion to the bad financial position and great indebtedness of New Zealand, concluded by proposing “ Success to the Upper Thames Navigation,” coupled with the name of their honored host. The toast was acknowledged, the feast adjourned, a trip on the river in Mr Firth’s steamer followed, and then the Premier escorted by Mr Whitaker took his departure for the celebrated Piako swamp.
