The totalisator in the saddling paddock, contained 193 tickets at £2 each, 62 were on Hornby. 25 Betrayer, 21 Laertes, 18 Yampire, 15 Hippo, 19 Balmoral, and 9 Hailstorm. This event caused great excitement Hornby was first favorite, but the knowing ones preferred Betrayer. Hailstorm looked fine and carried a lot of local money. Hippo had been tipped by “ Spectator” in the “ Herald,” and was backed to some extent, and Butler’s pair were also fancied. There were three false starts before the field was finally despatched. Balmoral cut out the running, with Hailstorm and Libeller close to her on the whip hand. Yampire headed the ruck a mile from the start. Otawa and Resolution then worked their way to the front, and looked dangerous, but ultimately died away. Hornby and Betrayer waited about fourth and fifth, until two miles had been covered, when they came away and entered the straight with Soukar in close company, and about half a dozen others apparently in it. Whip and spur then went to work. Derritt roused up Betrayer once, and then stalling of a determined rush, by Hornby, who came along gallantly under the whip, won a most exciting race by ahead, Soukar half length behind Hornby, third, Hippocampus fourth, Libeller fifth. The official time was Train. 131 secs, but Mr Redwood’s time was drain. lOsecs.
