[Per “Times” Special Wire.] Commissions for tUe Unemployed. Wellington, March 11. — Mr Burns, M.H.R. for lloslyn, has been appointed a member of the Commission on Local Industries. Parkinson has been appointed shorthand reporter to the Civil Service Commission. The Navvies’ Paradise. Hawera, March 11. Everything is quiet at the camp at Otaki. The road has been considerably straightened near the camp towards Katipokonoi by cutting across a swamp, and deep drains have been made, and the whole done in an exceedingly workmanlike manner. On the north of the camp some 60 chains arc already formed toward Oio. The constabulary and militia agree very well indeed, notwithstanding the predictions to the contrary and the latter are rapidly becoming adepts with longhandled shovels under the instructions of the former who are exceedingly kind to their distressed brethren. Subsidy to Christchurch. Christchurch, March 11. After deducting hospital aud charitable aid allowances, Christchurch only receives £620 from the Government subsidy to municipalities, for the half-year up to 13th June next. Juvenile Burglars. Dunedin, March 11.—The police have arrested Ernest Sydney James and Henry Conway, two boys concerned in the robbery of jewellery last week. They are remanded till Monday. Municipal. The Resident Magistrate has practically dismissed the information against a West Harbor Councillor. Guthrie and Barnach’s Sawmill Bestroyed. Invercargill, March 11. — Guthrie and Larnach’s large sawmill, at Woodend, near Invercargill, was burned down this morning, The mill was safe at 11 o’clock last night. The flames were discovered at 5 o’clock this morning, and in a short time the main buildings with smithy, saw-sharpening, and locomotive sheds attached, were soon reduced to ashes. The plant was the most complete of any in Southland. The mill included a 40-horsc power engine, three of the newest patent iron saw benches, sawing; planing, moulding, and tennoTiing machines, etc. In the main building, 20,000 feet of dressed timber were burned. The insurances are: —North British and Mercantile, £250 building, £SOO machinery ; Translantic, £360, machinery, £SOO plant ; New Zealand : £7OO building, £6OO machinery, £2OO engine ; South British: £IOOO engine and machinery; £SOO of the last amount was rc-insurcd in the Colonial. The foregoing arc all the insurances known here. McPherson, the manager, has, however, £3O in the Translantic, on his own private tools. The fire throws 45 persons out of employment. Meat Preserving. Meat preserving commences immediately, at the New Zealand Meat Preserving Cornpanj’-’s works, Woodland. Plenty of cattle can he had at the Company’s terms. Stable Burned. By a fire in a stable at McLachlan’s depot, the Victoria office loses £l5O. A Big Failure. The creditors yesterday agreed to the application for a discharge of Cuthbertson, of the firm of McEone aud Cuthbertson, who recently failed for £I6OOO.
