NEW SOUTH WALES. The report of the Inspector-General of Police states that 15 police have been killed by bushrangers during the last 10 years. In an action for damages, brought by Mr Simpson, M.P., against Mr Anderson, squatter, for assault, the damages were laid at £2OOO. A verdict was given for £l5O. The evidence showed that the assault took place as a sequel to a trumpery squabble at a ball. Trickett, senior, was acquitted for an alleged criminal assault on a girl under 12 years, as it transpired that the girl was kept locked up, on short commons, before she would- make the confession on which the charge was founded. Dr Degner, physician at Hill End, has recovered £52 damages from the proprietors of the “Evening News” and “ Town and Country Journal ” for slander. Linklater, banister, charged with bigamy, lias been released on his own recognisances, the Crown not having received from England the evidence requisite to prove the offence. Tlie Government have ordered marble statues of the Queen, Prince of Wales, and Australia from Signor Fontana. The cost is £IOOO each. QUEENSLAND. Graham Fenton, who published an obscene paper called “ The Pilgrim,” has been sentenced to a year’s imprisonment for forging a cheque. Tom Carey, charged with larceny, has been shot through the leg in attempting to escape an arresting constable in the Morcton Bay district. The leader of the Government prospecting party wires that ho has prospected the heads of the Cape and Flinders Rivers, and went to Stawell River, but found nothing payable. He lias started now for McKinlay Ranges to prospect, thence to Nicholson and Leichardt Rivers.
