[Pee “Times” Special Wike.] Dunedin in luck. Dunedin, March 1. —Mr Dick joins the Ministry as Colonial Secretary. Mr Dick’s Appointment. Referring to Mr Dick’s appointment the “ Times,” says that in all respects his acceptance of office is only right and natural. The Ministry, in securing him, have obtained the services of. an upright and consistent member, and one whose former official training should render him a good departmental chief. Otago is now fittingly represented in the Government by men of character and firmness. If Mr Dick adds nothing'in the way of eloquence to the benches, his presence in the Ministry affords one additional guarantee against land jobbery and sharp practices such as Mr Whitaker, justly or unjustly, is understood to favor. We heartily wish Mr Dick a successful career in his now and honorable post. The “ Herald says Mr Dick’s accession to office gives great satisfaction not only to Otago but to the colon}' at large. Mercenary Cricketers. A prominent member of the Australian team, writing to a friend here, says “ As we leave for England on March 11), visiting - you is now out of the question, but the team is very desirous of _visiting New Zealand, and arc considering now if they can do so on our return. If a lump sum is offered for our tour of the colonies, onr A'isit would be assurred, hut to come on our own account requires consideration.” Inquest. At the inquest on an infant, lately found dead in a closet, at the Auld Scotland Hotel, a verdict of “ Accidental Death ” was returned. A Councillor in Trouble. John Hewton, councillor for West Harbor, appears on Friday at the 11. M. Court, in answer to a summons charging him with being disqualified, through entering into a contract with the council. £SO penalty is sued for.
