DttKEDiXjFeb. 25.—The superiority of Grcymouth coal over Newcastle for gds making purposes has received a striking proof at Dunedin gas-works. The engineer reports that for the 28 days ending Feb. 28, Greymouth coal „ being used, the consumption was 50 .tons less than during the corresponding period of last .year, when Newcastle coal was used, while the quantity of gas-manufactured was 165,000 cubic feet more. Besides this the gas from ' Grey coal is of two candles greater illuminating power than that from Newcastle.,; The statement was made at the Council meeting. It shows a saving ) equal to £6,000 yearly. General Amnesty to Travellers. Mr Conyers has ordered all carriage doors on one side to be unlocked.
