BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of the Borough Council took place last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor, and Crs. Gibson, Boss, Sherratt, Bruce and Jones. Correspondence was read from : The Town Clerk, Dunedin, enclosing copy of building regulations. From D. Gcancy and J. Barrar offering to pay 10s per month off the amount charged to them for breakage of street lamps. The Clerk was instructed to collect the amounts.
From the Treasury, Wellington stating tliat the sum of £3 3s had been paid to the credit of the Borough at the Bank of JN T e\v Zealand, on account of repayment of fees and tines.
From W. Payner, asking to he appointed Inspector of waterworks pipes. The application was considered premature. From Mr F.G-. Wilson applying for permission to erect a stable at the rear of his premises in Elizabeth street.
Eesolvcd ; “ Tliat Mr Wilson having erected a stable on his property without the consent of the Council and the building not being in accordance with the Building Regulations and causing a loss to the owner of (he adjoining property, the special application for a modification be declined.’
From Messrs J. King and Benjamin Wallis, as trustees of the Star of Canterbury Lodge, asking for a right of way to Sophia street, of certain land sold by the applicants to Mr D. M. Boss, and which could not be registered without the consent of the Council. It was resolved to draw the attention of the applicants to sec l‘J9, Municipal Corporations Act. From Dr Williams, applying for leave to erect a surgery lamp in front of his dispensary. It was resolved that the application be granted, the erection of the lamp to be subject to the supervision of the foreman of works.
From Messrs Jones and Peters, asking for permission to cut away certain land belonging to the Council at the rear of Messrs Miles, Archer, and Co’s. After considerable discussion it was resolved that the application be declined. The Town Clerk was instructed to lay informations against all owners of unregistered dogs within the Borough. In reply to a question of Cr Jones as to whether the Goyermnentshould not be asked to take steps to remedy the nuisance of the offensive swamp in Bussell Square. The Mayor said the laud did not belong to the Government, as it was vested in the Council under clause 183 of the Municipal Corporations Act. It was, however, not in their power to do anything at the present time with it. The Mayor intimated that the liabilities of the Council including overdraft at the Bank, were £2203 Us 2d. Against this there was in their Solicitor’s hands £67 13, and in the Town Clerk’s £l9 10s and if the waterworks loan was floated there would be due to them about £I7OO, but still the most rigid economy should be exercised as the government subsidy will be discontinued after March. Accounts amounting to £l4 Us (Id were passed for payment, and after some further discussion, the Council adjourned.
