WALKING MATCH.
(Bv Telegraph.) DUNEDIN, Feil 23. A most exciting walking match came off in the Garrison Hall Dunedin on Saturday Night between John O’Connor the champion long distance walker of Timaru and Auckland, and W. Claxton champion walker of Otago. The distance to be walked was seven miles, and besides the stakes of £25 aside, the winner to be entitled to the walking championship of Otago. Both men were in good form, and Claxton was the favourite. At the word to go, the local man, who had the outside place, dashed off at a hot pace, closely followed by O’Connor. Claxton kept the lead till the third mile, when they finished together. Time —23mins. Isec. At the fourth mile O’Connor led, and in the last mile Ms splendid pace was loudly applauded. The Dunedin man was ultimately beaten by 100yds. Time 32secs. The contest throughout was an excellent one, and neither of the men broke once. O’Connor is willing to walk the same distance in the Garrison Hall, with any man in New Zealand for £IOO a-side. A five-mile handicap walking match also came off, and was won by Newman, with M'Ewan second. There were live competitors.
