[Per "Tiiibs” Special Wiee.l Tea Smuggling-. Auckland, Feb. 17. —At the Police Court, Ebeuezer Hastwell and William Peck, charged with a breach of the Customs regulations, by evading duty on a box of tea, per ship Fern Glen, were fined in the mitigated penalty of £25. An Old Relic. The skeleton found at Kaupakau bush, is supposed to be the remains of a man named Butler, who was lost there twenty years ago. A pair of boots, moss grown, with a piece of gold lace, was found near the skeleton. IVXrs Jack Sheppard Captured. Christchurch, Feb. 17. At the Magistrate’s Court, Miunie Edwards, alias Bench, under sentence of four years penal servitude, had her sentence extended for six months, for breaking out of Addington gaol. She had escaped through the window of her cell, and Mr Mcliish remarked that the cell was constructed in such a slovenly way as to afford encouragement to prisoners to escape. Ellen Thompson was fined 60s for harboring Bench, who was arrested in Thompson's house. Cabmen’s Pic-nic. INo cabs are to be seen in the city to-day, all the cabmen having gone to a pic-nic at Cashmere. They had a grand possession and a band-. Educational. Dunedin, Feb. 17. —Messrs Fulton Clark and Fergus are certain of election to the vacancies in the Education Board. The Dunedin School Committee bring the compulsory clauses into operation on April 15. manslaughter. McLoughlen has been committed for trial for the manslaughter of James Roberts near Eoxborough. The Heathen Chinee. Extensive frauds have been discovered in connection with the sale [of spurious gold by Chinese at Cromwell. The manager of the Colonial Bank there detected a parcel of spurious gold. Ah Sin has been arrested at Haseby, through Chinese influence. The Banks at other places have purchased a small quantity. It is believed an extensive spurious gold manufactory exists. Breach of trust. Invercargill, Feb. 15. —Judgment was given in the District Court yesterday, against H. Mayo for £lO and costs. The evidence showed that money which had been given to Mayo to place in the bank had been used by him, for his own purpose. Judge Harvey said this amouuted to a breach of trust but decided to treat it us a debt case. The plaintiff in another action was sent to gaol for 48 hours for using a strong term to the defendant while in the witness box. Serious Railway Accident. Boon after the train left town for Clinton last evening the driver missed the fireman, John Leonard. The train was stopped, and Leonard was found alongside the line insensible. He is supposed to have gone out on the stage
and missed his hold, falling backwards. He was removed to the hospital, where he was found to be-suffering from concussion of the brain, arid he is still unconscious. His wife and family reside at Clinton. Destruction of Timber. A busk fire at .JCaJialcu, destroyed Potter’s old mill, and 200 acres bush recently purchased for £6OOO. besides £SOO worth of sawn timber.
